When the magistrate ended the call, he instructed his secretary to reschedule his meetings for the afternoon.

“Oh, and Patricia, inform the flight crew to have the helicopter ready, immediately.”

He disconnected the call without waiting for her reply. He lifted the Russian cut crystal drinking glass off the coaster and downed the remainder of his drink. The Platinum label blended scotch whisky warmed his chest as he walked over to the rosewood ebony kas on the opposite side of the room.

The 18th century Dutch-designed wardrobe was a family heirloom. Passed down from generation-to-generation for three hundred years. He had hoped to one day gift it to his son. His son, Peter, however, wanted nothing to do with him.

He still blames me for Mallory's death.

The magistrate sighed. He pulled the heavy doors of the wardrobe open, and pulled a suit jacket off a hanger. He donned the dark colored, tailor-made London pinstripe, and checked his red tie in the mirror. Even for an impromptu meeting with a senator, the magistrate always looked his best.

The timing couldn't have been worse, but the senator was in a panic. The media had discovered his link to Lazzaro de Medici, and threatened to expose a secret he had kept from the American people.

“I can't be implicated in this!” The ambitious senator had insisted.

“Nothing will jeopardize your candidacy, senator.” The magistrate assured him. “Your nomination is all but certain.”

The magistrate's assurances fell on deaf ears.

Despite everything The Group had done for the senator's career, his confidence was shaken. Even with the presidential primaries more than six months away, he feared his political aspirations had been compromised.

The magistrate was left with no other option. He needed to meet with the senator, personally. It was the only way he would be able to convince him to trust in The Group's ability to manage the situation, and to assess the senator’s state of mind.

As he walked past his desk, he lifted his tablet off its charging stand. He swiped at the screen, and typed a message with the virtual keypad. He included an attachment with the email, and transmitted the missive immediately.

I wish you hadn't betrayed us, Angelo. You were my favorite.
